Learning Spanish in Busan

Thu, 2010-09-02 14:44

I'm looking to learn Latin American Spanish and am curious if there happen to be any classes for English speakers.  I know it's a longshot, but if anyone knows of Spanish classes in Busan I'd love to know about them!

Costs of Flights

Tue, 2010-08-31 20:45

Man flights have become expensive here. 5 days to Beijing for 899 plus all kinds if extras. That used to be like 500 bucks. I went to Shanghai years ago for 280 bucks-this was over Lunar New Year. I love that companies added the fuel tax when oil was 150 a barrell but never got rid of it when it went back down. And the taxes here are getting crazy-like 33%. Travelling out kof Korea is not what is used to be although there are some good travel places out there. One is Lotte travel near Bexco. Also, for those in Jangsan, there is a place in the 2001 outlet (in basement). He speaks english and his rates are better than other places in Jangsan. Just a word to the wise. Some charge more because they claim to speak english but most places do now. Happy travels.

Air con in Busan (Help me stay cool)

Tue, 2010-08-31 19:31

Hey guys,

We can't take it anymore...The heat is just too unbearable.  Can someone recommend a place to get a cheap Air conditioner? Does anyone know someone who is looking to sell one (I am in the Centum Area)? I tried Gmarket but it looks like they only ship in the Seoul Area. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Good Dermatologist

Can anyone recommend a good dermatologist in Busan?  Haeundae would be ideal but other parts of town are fine as well.

New Indian Restaurant in Haeundae

Mon, 2010-08-30 11:06

Last night my friend and I wanted to have Indian food in Ganga, but when we arrived there, about 10 people were waiting in line, so we decided to go somewhere else.

Then we found Namaste, the new Indian restaurant (3 branches in Seoul though), which is very close to Ganga.

We ordered two curry (lamb and chicken) and two nan. one rice...

Their main dishes are $3 cheaper than those in Ganga in average, but quality is VERY good.

This dinner cost us ~35000won.

Here is the direction of the new restaurant: http://ditu.google.com/maps/ms?hl=zh-CN&safe=strict&client=aff-cs-360se&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=35.163442,129.159672&spn=0.01249,0.01929&z=16&brcurrent=3,0x31508e64e5c642c1:0x951daa7c349f366f,1%3B5,0,1&msid=100449861518836355008.00048f00d0dbe6206989c

I marked Ganga, Namaste and subway station here.

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience

Sun, 2010-08-29 11:22

“You should have been able to see everything as a tourist already, why do you need to come back again?

That’s what an Immigration officer asked me at the Busan Ferry terminal and then suggested I might be working illegally.

I'm not currently teaching English (had in the past) and was on my way to Japan to have my passport stamped so I could stay in Korea for another 90 days, but ran into a nightmare as I was trying to pass through immigration. I was pulled our of line and brought into an immigration office.

The first immigration officer didn't understand that I was visiting Korea on my passport and kept asking for a working I.D. even though I kept repeating...passport...tourist...not working. The second immigration officer trying to assist kept asking me to fill out unnecessary forms because he also thought I was working in Korea. The third immigration officer trying to assist finally understood that I wasn't working in Korea and then turned really "mean."

She asked why I needed to come back again and suggested that I was an illegal worker. She kept repeating that Canadians and Americans work illegally on their passports and that she would have to check with my past employers, etc. to see if there were any problems with my past stays in Korea. She asked me about my finances. It was difficult to offer a simple explanation without being ignored and making the immigration officer more angry.

It felt like an interrogation.

I had arrived early, but now my boat was leaving in 15 minutes. I pointed that out and the immigration officer said I could go but that she would have to check with my past employers, etc., and emphasized that she would see me again in the afternoon on my return trip from Japan.

Does anyone know about the Tsu Islet (Tsushima or DAEMADO) Japan?

Fri, 2010-08-27 16:06

I would like to know if anybody traveled to the closest islet Japan from here in Busan.  It is called Tsushima (Tsu Island) that everybody can view stretches from the Gwangan Big Bridge through the Orukdo Islets or directly from Haeundae beach or New Town.

I like to know it better with a half day travel through an agency.  Or could I just do it myself.  Book a flight or ferry, book a hotel or carry a tent with me, just get over there, and see what it is like.  What I read and heard about it sounds like an historic place for Koreans.

Need advice on this contract

Fri, 2010-08-27 13:13

So I am in Busan now and I got an offer earlier this week.  After getting the contract I looked up some checklists on job forums and made sure the school was not on any blacklist.

Everything seems in order except the details about the accommodations are scarce.

Bed, dresser, air con, TV and gas stove.

All I know about the location is that it is 10 minutes from the school.

I've already tried asking for the address, and no response yet.

Obviously I want to avoid being rude as the job market is pretty dry right now and I don't want to blow this.

Should I be more insistent about what's included and where its located before signing and sending in my documents?
