Interview with Shin Young Man
Executive Director of the Coalition of Busan Booksellers

1) What are your main reasons for not wanting a Kyobo store to open here.

Translated Summary--> There was an original agreement signed in 1994 not to open a store in the provinces. Kyobo tried to use huge capital to keep the national market to themselves as well as provincial ones of Korea. In conclusion, our publication business is focused on Kyobo.

2) Kyobo has been trying to open a store in Busan since 1986, but your coalition was always able to prevent them from opening. What changed to allow it to open now?

Translated Summary--> It's same story in 1986 too. They came down to Busan for the reason of cultural business, since then they have never provided citizens with events or exhibitions for the people not using this space for the store. They just wanted to make money and they didn't support any events for culture. Besides Kyobo deals with the best selling books only.

3) Have you had any recent discussion with the management of Kyobo? If so, what was said at those meetings?

Translated Summary--> We can get very rare books in Dongbo and Youngkwang book store.
Only one thing has to be improved. That is we have to use very narrow steps because of small space, but we can fully revise this matter.

5) Some people say that this is just an example of 'regionalism' and that this is bad for Korea overall. How do you respond to them? Follow up: Would you be against a large Busan based company opening branches in other parts of Korea? Do you think all large non-Busan based companies (i.e. Carrefour, Walmart, Lotte) should be boycotted and/or closed?

Translated Summary--> It's not allowed only for Kyobo to open in Busan. Because it has excluded other stores using its power of capital. So it has to be closed.
Of course we can't help allowing other big markets because it is an aspect of governmental policy. However we consistently resist the opening of the new markets in Busan.

Translated Summary--> I don't know know yet because I have not entered the store. A few citizens say that Kyobo has good facilities to enjoy, but we can improve our stores gradually and improve our facilities as well.
