Foreigner Bank Survey

Thanks to Rocky for bringing this to our attention:

Korean banks are confused about how to handle foreigner's needs due to the government's lack of specific regulations. To try to fix/standardize the problem and respond to foreigner's needs, there is an online survey to gain information about what needs we have.

January Events

From the Events Calendar:

This weekend the calendar offers up a couple of very different events. On Saturday, January 19th is the 21st annual Busan Polar Bear Swim at Haeundae Beach.

For those who are into the DJ scene there's a fantastic line-up of DJs spinning at the Grand Hotel in Haeundae. The headliner is Towa Tei.

Towa Tei was born in Tokyo, He moved to New York City in 1987 and he became involved in the New York City club scene. He first earned notice for his production work on the Jungle Brothers' 1989 LP Done by the Forces of Nature.

In 1990, he shot to fame as a member of the downtown New York club trio Deee-Lite. The group scored an international hit with 'Groove Is In the Heart'.

In 1991, Towa Tei and Super DJ Dmitri collaborated with Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto on the song 'Rap the World'.

After two albums, 1990's World Clique and 1992's Infinity Within, Towa Tei left Deee-Lite to begin working on solo projects; his debut album 'Future Listening!', appeared in 1995. His second album for Elektra Records was 1998's Sound Museum. On it, he collaborated with Kylie Minogue for the track 'GBI: German Bold Italic', which reached number 20 in Japan and number 63 in the UK. Bebel Gilberto also did vocals for the album. This was followed by album Last Century Modern in 1999.

He builded Sibuya Techno mark, and he is playing unique music with not just Electronic but also bossa nova, jazz, soul.

New Years Eve

New Year's Eve is upon us and lots of things have been added to the calendar, so for those who haven't checked it out, here are some of the highlights:

Busan City New Year Festival Events happening in both Youngdusan Park and Haeundae Beach. Click the link for details!

At the Bars:

Up in PNU it's the annual New Year's bash with Soul Trane, Moe's, Crossroads and B-Side hopping till the early hours of 2008, and with free drinks at midnight.

In Kyungsung, it's much the same with Busan's best DJs spinning in the new year at Vinyl Underground and good tunes and vibe at Ol' 55. Drink specials, too!

Also in Kyungsung, Kino-Eye is having The Last Reel Party, a bash to ring in the new year with drink specials.

Swinging back to PNU is drink specials all night and a 40/40 draw at Cuba, owned by the former Camel Bar owner.

If you're looking for something a bit more tame to do the lights get turned on Christmas Tree Festival at Kosin University at 7:30 pm. Spin by to see their annual light offering and for a preview, Busan Mike has a great photo-entry on his blog to check out before heading up.

December events

December is a busy time time in Busan with lots of events on the calendar.

Saturday, December 8th is Pusan Poetry Plus+ 38 at the Monk Jazz Club in Dayeon-dong. Anyone is welcome to perform, but are asked to sign up in advance. Contact info is in the calendar entry.

Ever wanted to try your hand at kimchi making? Well, December 12th is you chance. BFIA is hosting this event and you must register. Visit the BFIA page for the application form.

December 15th will be a rocking night with Las Pistolas, a Seoul-based rock group, swinging down to Ol' 55 for one night only.

Also on December 15th the NNC (Native and non-Native Collaborator's Group) is hosting a Bachelor and Bachelorette Auction as a fundraiser for Busan orphanages at Vinyl Underground. There will also be a silent auction and food and drink specials all night. Specific donations will be accepted at the door for the orphanages as well.

On Wednesday, December 19th, Koreans go to the polls to vote in a new president. For us foreign non-voters, we get a day off. Election Day in S. Korea is a statutory holiday!

And the last event on this update is the international touring cast of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Busan from Dec. 21 to 23rd. For those interested in musicals, this is a rare chance to see one in English.
