May : PNU Hospital fancies itself as the premier
teaching hospital in town and charges accordingly. Very friendly, but I
suspect over-servicing. They have a special foreigner reception area on
the 6th floor, with a reception nurse, Kim Dong-Hee, who is trying hard
to learn English. It is a big hospital with specialists for most
problems, including dentistry.

Samsun hospital impressed me. It looks modern, it is CLEAN, the
receptionists speak English, as well as the doctors and X-ray personnel
and pay clerks, and it is small enough that it is easy to find your way
around. It is also easy to find. Take the subway to Naengjeong subway
station (number 224). Walk out exit number 5, and you will see the
Samsun Hospital building not far down the street.

May Bonsaeng Hospital has at
least two branches: one at Allak Rotary near Dongnae, and one about a
block back from Pusanjin subway, towards Somyeon. These are workaday
hospitals, slightly scruffy, always crowded, and English speakers are
hard to find, especially amongst reception staff. However, they claim
to be "the cheapest". I can recommend the dentist at the Dongnae
branch. Unlike the rest of the hospital, he was desperate for
patients. A middle aged man, ex-army dentist, with pretty good English,
he seems to know his trade well... and he charged a LOT less than
PNU.
Here is a sample medical charge: anyone who plans on tripping down some
steps and tearing the meniscus (cartilage) in their knee, like I did,
is looking at w350,000 for an MRI scan at Bonsaeng (Pusanjin branch).
To cheer me up, they confided that the charge at PNU hospital is
w470,000 (MRIs are not covered by Korea's pathetic medical insurance
system). If surgery is necessary, the damage is around a further
1,000,000 won.

To get to us, take a cab from Nampo-Dong or Busan University Hospital
(it will cost you about 3000won). We are located right next to the last
stop for the Bus No 35 and just look for the Teddy Bear with a
stethoscope around his neck.

Recommendation: This dentist went to
Michigan State University and Seoul National . His English is
excellent. He has a brand new office with state-of-the-American-art
equipment. He is easy to find: take the subway to Namcheon Station
(number 211), leave the subway using exit number 1. Walk towards where
the road splits in two, there is a pedestrian walkway spanning the
roads. Dr. Lee's clinic is 40 feet beyond the base of the stairs on the
right-side road, in front of you. The clinic has signs over the door on
the building and is located on the second floor.

- a dentist in Pusan near the Hyundai Department store. His
English skills won't blow you away, but he can communicate very well in
may be called "Dental English". Which means he can tell you
that "your bottom left molar is abcess. . . you need extraction" or

Dr. Hong,
Sung Jun - a very good Christian Doctor in Suyoung Gu. He
specializes in internal medicine, but could also be considered a
general practitioner. His clinic is named "Hong Clinic", and
it is located in Mangmechugong Apartments in Mangmedong. Besides his
ability to speak quite good English, I found this young doctor to be
really very intelligent and very kind. An added advantage is that his
wife is a specialist in skin care and beauty treatment. Their
clinic is fairly new and would be a definite advantage to members of
Suyoungro Church from where this is a short walk. His clinic is well
equipped and his treatment very satisfactory. His
phone number is 759 8060 (this one is received by his receptionists).

bus # 98 goes there. The doctor's name is Dr. Yoon.

address is Busan, (Kwang Yuk Shi ) Saha-gu, DaDae 1 dong, 1441-13. The
Korean word for Gynogologist is San Bu In Gwa.
He is an older man (late 50's or early 60's) and he worked or trained
in the U.S. Midwest for 4 or 5 years. He English is
excellent, he is kind and gentle. It was just like going to a
Gynocologist back home in Canada. The prices are
reasonable. A pap, check up and all STD tests but HIV only
cost about 80,000 won.

If you have a broken bone,
arthritis, gout, frozen shoulder, or just joint pains...go see an
orthopedic specialist. I recommend: Dr. Choi Ho at the Samsun Hospital.
Dr. Choi speaks good English and is has a good reputation with his
peers. His office number is 322-0900. He has office hours Monday and
Wednesday 9:40 to 11:30. He also sees people on Saturday. Samsun
Hospital is easy to find. Take the subway to Naengjeong subway station
(number 224). Walk out exit number 5, and you will see the Samsun
Hospital building not far down the street.

Namcheon Pharmacy
If you live in Nam Cheon Dong, and near Kwang An Li beach, there is an
English speaking pharmacist who will fill your scripts, explain them
carefully, and answer any questions. Take your body and/or prescription
to the "Mi Rae Pharmacy". This drugstore is located at the entrance to
the Nam Choen Subway entrance number 3.. It is a large store, the
entrance has a short flight of steps off the sidewalk in front of the
subway entrance. Ask for Mr. Park Seong Hyeon... actually, you don't
need to ask, he is the guy who brings you your medicines.. His Cell
Phone (use only for emergency/need help in English) is: 016-545-7252.

Namcheon Medical Supply Store
Across the street from where the buses stop (after leaving Kyungsung
Dae-Pukyoung Dae), in front of the "Pizza Yes" restaurant and the pet
store that specializes in terrier/snauzer dogs [the busses are on their
way towards the KBS building,towards Hae Un Dae], is a medical supply
store who's owner speaks excellent English. He has great discounts,
especially on hardware like medical TENS/accupuncture/pain relief
units, he gives good advice, and he can sell you anything from crutches
to braces. His name is Mr. Choe Moon Hwan, but call him "Charley".
Phone number: 622-3088, or 622-9992. He is a friendly guy, stop by and
say hello.

the subway to Sasang, walk out exit # 5 (Sobu Bus Terminal). Walk
straight out of the exit past the KFC and the Lotteria stores. Walk
past the next traffic light ( You will see an LG25 store on the
corner), then keep walking past the next traffic light (you will find a
branch of the Korea First Bank...KFB...at the light). About 40 meters
further on you will see Dr. Jung's signs on the building-front over the
sidewalk; they are the only ones with the "medical cross" (+) on the
top . Turn left into the stairwell, between the pharmacy and the beauty
shop. His office is on the second floor, across from the barber shop. See photo of office entrance
He speaks good English, and you can go to him with any sort of problem.
If he can not help you, he will immediately make you an appointment
with someone else who can (and who also speaks English), and then he
will show you how to go there. He is a miracle worker, provides
thorough allergy testing and remarkably successful remedies.
Dr. Jung's specialty is anything to do with the lungs, especially
allergies and smokers. Got a cough? Go see him!-

Pomildong subway, and turn left toward the market area. The door to the
clinic is between two jewellery shops. These two doctors not only speak
very good English, but they were prepared to spend much more time with
me than would have been the case in my own country. The receptionists
do only speak just a little English, but they are very welcoming. If
