Who Investigates Crime in Korea Changes on October 2

On July 31 the National Assembly passed a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act removing prosecutors' investigative powers, and on October 2 the 검찰청 (Prosecution Service) will be abolished after 78 years. Two agencies replace it: the 공소청 (Public Prosecution Office) under the Ministry of Justice, which decides whether to bring charges, and the 중대범죄수사청 (Serious Crimes Investigation Agency) under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which investigates major crimes.
